Ten Ways to Clean Weekly when You Live with Pets

Weekly cleaning schedule, pets, routine

Pets are wonderful to have in one’s home but they add challenges to keeping things clean. Here is a weekly cleaning schedule to help you keep up with the extra cleaning that pets bring.

First let’s review a few tasks that are best done daily:

1. For cats, you have the litter box to clean of course. Most cats are finicky about this and prefer a daily routine. You will know your cat best of course.

2. With litter boxes, there is also the accompanying annoyance of litter on the surrounding floors. It’s a great idea to have a stick vacuum or a mechanical sweeper near the litter box to to keep up with it daily.

3. Our pets are prone to ‘accidents’ of all sorts and it is really important to get them up as soon as you can when they happen.
Otherwise they will stain and create odors that you may have to live with. An enzyme cleaner like Nature’s Miracle works very well. It makes sense to have a bottle on hand.

4. Finally, it’s a good practice to wipe off your dogs paws after a walk. This can save a lot of build up on your floors.

Weekly Routine

5. Pick a time that works for you and make it part of your routine. Maybe a Saturday morning or after dinner some weeknight.

6. Floors are always a concern when there are pets around. It’s a good idea to do a full mop of your kitchen and other main traffic lanes in your home. A good vacuuming in the rooms that your pets hang out in is helpful too. Seasonally is a good length of time to shampoo your carpets in those areas where animals hang out a lot or that have become stained.

7. Furniture: Does your cat or dog have a favorite chair—or two or three? Use that upholstery attachment to vacuum it down. Have you found paw prints on your glass table? Now’s the time to wipe them off.

8. Our pets love to look out windows. So be sure to wipe off the traces of your pet’s watch over the goings on outside.

9. Your dog’s bedding can use a weekly wash. Be sure to wipe down your dog’s crate too. While you’re at it, if your pets sleeps with you, it’s a good idea to wash your sheets weekly.

10. Check your pet’s toys. If they’ve become groddy, give them a swipe with a cloth and disinfectant.

Hopefully, this will give you some sense of what you need to do to keep your home clean with pets!
